Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to boil and cook the ziti or penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage, breaking it into smaller pieces, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes.
Add the minced garlic to the sausage and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the marinara sauce and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, sausage and marinara mixture, ricotta cheese, and fresh spinach. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Transfer the pasta mixture to a large baking dish. Top with shredded mozzarella, spreading it evenly over the pasta.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. If desired, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes to get a golden crust on the cheese.
Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.
