Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Once the butter is melted, add the granulated sugar and stir continuously until the mixture is well combined and starts to bubble.
Slowly add the heavy cream while continuing to stir. Be cautious as the mixture will bubble up vigorously.
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in vanilla extract and salt until well incorporated.
Allow the butterscotch sauce to cool down before serving or storing it in a jar.
