Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, then add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente.
While the pasta is cooking, mince the garlic cloves finely and chop the parsley.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until golden, about 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
Add the red pepper flakes to the skillet and cook for an additional 30 seconds, stirring occasionally.
Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water and then drain the spaghetti.
Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet with the garlic and peper flakes. Toss to coat evenly.
If the pasta seems dry, add a little reserved pasta water, one tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is achieved.
Season with additional salt and black pepper to taste.
Remove the pan from heat and stir in chopped parsley.
Serve immediately, drizzling additional olive oil on top if desired.
