Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
While the pasta is cooking, heat olive oil over medium heat in a large saucepan.
Finely chop the onion and garlic. Add them to the saucepan and sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add the canned tomatoes, oregano, and basil to the saucepan. Stir to combine.
Add sugar, salt, and pepper to taste. Allow the sauce to simmer on medium-low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Combine the cooked pasta and marinara sauce, tossing them together.
Grate the parmesan cheese and sprinkle over the pasta before serving.
