In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and butter over medium heat. Stir continuously until the butter is melted and the mixture becomes homogenous.
Once the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture starts to bubble, let it cook for 4-5 minutes. Do not stir during this time to prevent crystallization but you can swirl the pan gently.
Remove the pan from the heat and slowly whisk in the milk. Be cautious as the mixture will bubble up rapidly.
Return the pan to the heat, and add the salt. Allow it to simmer for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cool the caramel sauce slightly before transferring to a jar. Let it come to room temperature before serving. It will thicken as it cools.
