In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs and 1 cup of milk until well combined and frothy.
Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter or oil to the pan and let it melt or heat up.
Dip each slice of whole grain bread into the egg and milk mixture, making sure to coat both sides but not letting it soak too long to prevent sogginess.
Place the coated bread slices onto the heated skillet. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.
Once cooked, transfer the French toast to a plate. Repeat the process with the remaining slices of bread, adding more butter or oil as needed.
Serve the French toast warm with a generous drizzle of maple syrup over the top.
