Total: 1 hour
Side DishVegetarianComfort Food

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 2 cups (grated) cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 clove (minced) garlic
  • 1 teaspoon thyme

Instructions

1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

2

Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly (about 1/8 inch thick) using a mandoline or a sharp knife.

3

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

4

Add the milk to the saucepan, then stir in the salt, black pepper, and thyme. Heat until warm but not boiling.

5

Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a baking dish. Pour half of the milk mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle half of the grated cheese evenly.

6

Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, milk mixture, and cheese.

7

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place in the oven. Bake for 30 minutes.

8

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy, and the potatoes are tender.

9

Allow the gratin to cool for about 5 minutes before serving to let it set.
