Cook the penne pasta in boiling salted water until al dente, according to package instructions, then drain.
While the pasta cooks, finely chop the onion and garlic. Dice the tomatoes.
Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sauté until the onion is translucent.
Add the diced tomatoes to the pan, season with salt and black pepper, and cook until the tomatoes break down into a sauce, about 10 minutes.
Add the cooked penne pasta to the sauce and mix well to combine. Tear the basil leaves and add them just before serving.
Serve the pasta hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
